Climate
Temperature
It is always summer on Bonaire. During the day between 29-32 degrees, with a trade wind from the East. A completely different heat than in Europe, not as humid as in Asia, but warm enough to take it easy, discover the island and stay on or around the water. In the evenings and nights it is around 25-27 degrees. Sublime to enjoy outside. Good for your body and your head.
Wind
Sometimes there are days or periods when the wind blows a little less or comes from a different direction. This is especially the case between October and January. Then you take things a bit easier, turn up the fan a little, but above all, you head to the water more often to swim, surf, dive, snorkel, or boat.
Rain
Sometimes. And when it rains, it is often a heavy shower. Half an hour later you are back in the sun. The temperature remains good. Swimming is nice while it is raining! It rains a bit more between September and January.
What is the best time to visit Bonaire?
You can have a wonderful time on Bonaire all year round. The weather and opportunities to enjoy the island are always about the same. Most people come between mid-December and June.
Are there mosquitoes?
Yes, you are in the tropics, of course there are mosquitoes. The apartments are beautifully situated in the garden, with sufficient wind on your terrace through beautiful ceiling and floor fans. You can also smear yourself with anti-mosquito spray. Also light long trousers / clothing is a good way to enjoy your evening in a relaxed way. In short, you don't have to be bothered by mosquitoes.
Which languages?
You can get by very well on the island with Dutch, English and Spanish. Besides Dutch, Papiamentu is the official language.
Transport
Rent a car
To fully enjoy what Bonaire has to offer, a rental car is highly recommended. More specifically: you need a (rental) car. You can rent a car from us (pick up) or through us (from a rental company). Alternatively, you can also get by with a scooter. We can arrange both for you!
Public transport
There is no public transport on Bonaire. The aim is to have buses running from January 2027.
Cycling / Mountain biking
Cycling is possible, but not recommended as a means of transport. It is warm, the wind is blowing, the roads are mediocre (getting better) and there are no cycle paths. Mountain biking in various places in nature (cunucu) is possible, if you like that.
Taxi / Uber
Taxis are available on the island. Uber is NOT available on the island. #dontdrinkanddrive
Money
On Bonaire the currency is the US$ (American dollar). You can easily use your bank card. Don't forget to set it to "world". Almost all shops and restaurants have a pin machine. There are enough ATMs. Paying cash is highly appreciated on the island. Leave your Euros at home, you don't have to exchange them on Bonaire. You can withdraw dollars from the ATM at banks and supermarkets.
To dive
Bonaire is the diving island par excellence. You can enter the water from the shore at more than 40 beautiful diving sites. This also applies to snorkeling. You will enter the aquarium in amazement every time. From our location you can quickly (5 minutes) reach a large number of diving and snorkeling sites on the south side of the island. Need a good diving school / instructor or tips? We will arrange it.
Nature fairy
To protect the (underwater) nature of Bonaire, every visitor to Bonaire pays a so-called 'nature fee'. This STINAPA Nature Fee can be purchased online and is per calendar year per person. Rate 2025: $40 pp
Bonairean nights
It gets dark between 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM. The sunsets are beautifully varied and quick. The evenings are sublime, and it cools down to 25-27 degrees. Even with the wind, you still won't need a sweater. There are many good restaurants on the island where you can enjoy wonderful meals. We can make reservations for you. Of course, you can also simply eat on your porch (the terrace of your apartment) or in the garden. That is also a place where you can relax with a book, a drink, your eyes closed, or with beautiful stories. Our kitchens are fully equipped and complete. You really don't have to eat out (every evening).
Stinapa Nature Fairy
If you enter the water, you are expected to pay the Stinapa Nature Fee. Stinapa is responsible for the management of the (underwater) nature on and around Bonaire.
The cost is $ 40 pp and your QR code is valid for a calendar year.
Tourist tax
Everyone pays this tax before entering the island. It is called Visitor Entry Tax and is charged to all non-residents who visit the island by air or boat.
This tourist tax can be paid online via https://tourismtax.bonairegov.com can be paid by credit card or Ideal from seven (7) days prior to your trip to Bonaire.
